Soroptimist International of Rancho Cordova & Gold River
Annually, our club provides:
- Live Your Dream Award grants for a head-of-household mothers returning to school
- Ruby Award: Award grant to a woman involved in outstanding community volunteerism or a business or organization that addresses women’s issues.
- “Comfort Kits” and “Comfort Kids”—totes and backpacks that contain full-size essentials for women, and women with children who are escaping a violent environment
- Work with Project 680 to provide socks & underwear to homeless and at-risk students in FCUSD, purchased new bras for homeless teen girls and nursing bras to adolescent mothers attending Walnutwood High School.
Additional community activities our club has supported:
- Created dozens of pillowcase dresses for the Dress A Girl Around the World program, which provides young girls in developing countries with a nice dress to discourage traffickers from kidnapping them
- Co-hosted the “STOP Trafficking” Symposium in 2011 to educate the community about the Human Trafficking crisis
- Assisted at the 1st Annual Rancho Cordova Police Activities League Fun Run in Dec. ‘09
- Participate in Rancho Cordova’s International Festival (iFest) and volunteered at community Christmas Tree lighting
- Sent money to purchase 40 Solar Cookers for the International Solar Cooker Kit project to help Darfur refugees
- Answered the urgent need of St. John’s Women’s shelter with the donation of over 1,000 diapers.
- Volunteered at the Cordova Food Locker at Thanksgiving & Christmas
- Funded for “homeless” and deserving high school senior girls to attend Senior Ball with a nice dress, shoes, make-up & up-do
- Provided a holiday party, photos with Santa, gifts, punch & cookies; to a needy local elementary school where most of the families live below the poverty line.
